Lab Grown CVD Diamond
CVD diamonds, or Chemical Vapor Deposition diamonds, are lab-grown diamonds created by depositing carbon atoms onto a diamond seed in a controlled environment. They are chemically, physically, and optically identical to natural diamonds, with the same hardness (10 on the Mohs scale), brilliance, and structure. The CVD process involves placing a diamond seed in a vacuum chamber filled with carbon-rich gases (like methane and hydrogen), heated to around 800–1200°C, where the gases ionize, and carbon atoms layer onto the seed, forming a diamond over weeks.
Key Points:
- Advantages: More affordable (30–40% less than natural diamonds), ethical (no mining), eco-friendly, and customizable in size and quality. They often achieve high purity (Type IIa, rare in nature).
- Flaws: Like natural diamonds, they can have inclusions or color tints (e.g., brown), though these can be minimized or treated.
- Comparison to HPHT: CVD uses lower pressure and temperature than the High-Pressure High-Temperature (HPHT) method, offering better control over clarity but sometimes lower quality than HPHT diamonds.
- Grading: Certified by GIA or IGI using the 4Cs (cut, color, clarity, carat), with origin noted. They’re indistinguishable from natural diamonds without specialized equipment.
- Applications: Beyond jewelry, CVD diamonds are used in electronics (e.g., power transistors) and thermal management due to their conductivity and heat resistance.
