Difference Between Chromite and Chrome Concentrate
- Chromite Ore (Raw Material)
- Definition: Chromite is a naturally occurring mineral composed primarily of chromium, iron, and oxygen (FeCr₂O₄).
- Form: It is mined as raw ore and usually contains low concentrations of chromium (30-40%).
- Use: Mainly used as a raw material for ferrochrome production and stainless steel manufacturing.
- Chrome Concentrate (Processed Form)
- Definition: Chrome concentrate is a processedand enriched form of chromite ore with a higher percentage of chromium (45-55% or more).
- Processing: Chromite undergoes beneficiation, where impurities (silica, iron, etc.) are removed using crushing, grinding, gravity separation, and flotation.
- Use: Primarily used for ferrochrome production, which is then used in stainless steeland specialty alloys.
Key Differences in Trade & Value
- Chromite oreis cheaper and less refined, while chrome concentrate is more valuable due to its higher chromium content.
- Many countries prefer to import chrome concentrate instead of raw chromite oreto save on processing costs.
